This time of year seems to remind me of crafts and hobbies. Perhaps it's the holiday fairs encouraging consumers to start thinking about decorating and gifts. Maybe it's because garden season is coming to a close which frees time for checking out the latest in decorating. What ever the reason....Marvel has something to offer your craft or hobbies appetite!!
Here we are in week 4, Let's check this out.
1.I'm checking into the Hobbies and Crafts Reference Center of Marvel, the categories are not quite what I'm looking for so I'm checking the " View All Topics" section, I'm going to take a look at Equestrian because my youngest daughter enjoys horses. Between everything offered there are several pages of materials including videos for basic care. I'm narrowing the results to Horsemanship to see if our library carries any of the materials offered here, I'm checking with the "advanced search" and adding the reading materials I'm specifically looking for that our library carries. We do not have any periodicals for Equestrian and what I'm checking is the non-fiction books. I'm not finding any that are not part of this data base, so here's more items for my daughter to investigate!
2. Using the Project tab I've found different items for downloading, one would be very helpful for beginners titled "ABC's for teaching tyke riders" Excellent steps for parents, which takes toddler from rocking horse to real horse. Another which caught my eye for my daughter was "Learn the Emergency Dismount". Not only did this have a clear step by step instruction but also pictures for a clearer understanding for younger ages.
3. In the upper right hand corner is the "help" guide and, interestingly enough there is a " EBSCO customer support representative" who can be reached every day from 9am -5pm EST. along with an email address. On the right side of the guide is a column which offers information for step by step help. Checking the "searching" guide each category to click on gives easy instructions for the home page and what each areas can offer when searching for an interest.
As Patrons wonder in our non-fiction area for an introduction or further ideas for whatever hobbies/crafts they are about to begin or continue, this online reference center makes my job easier to find quality information without having to purchase extra materials!!

Week 3 MARVELous Maine
My observations of ProQUEST: Without using the video tutorial had me alittle confused, I went from reading the current invitational, right into the listed ProQuest which quickly got me lost, so thank you very much for that 3 minute review of how to maneuver about this site! I would have been able to figure this out on my own, as I have used this search engine years past, but that would have taken more time to acclimate myself.
Staying on the issue of earthquakes I decided to see what I could find for articles about any news. So I took my advance search of Earthquakes and Maine and 2012 searching in Article form and, so I came up with 52 results of nothing close to what I was looking for. REGROUP!! I'm going to start over in Basic search with earthquakes and have now received 1,487 results. I enjoyed the article, "Quake leaves area shaken, not stirred" Kennebec Journal. I've heard throughout this week that we've had quakes before, interestingly the last minor quake was in 2006 by Mount Desert Island with a 4.2...huh, I don't recall that....plus there were tremors for several months after that.
I'm off to check out another blog post and see what's happening with the others :)
Okay I know it's "snap shot" week, and I've been working in the library for 12 hours this week with this Invitational at the Circulation desk. First, most Patrons are interested in knowing what I am working on but as to taking the time to use it Or talk alittle about what I'm doing, I've received more encouragement for me than actually trying it themselves. Well next week is another week and I'm really going to encourage some exploring for the Patrons I interact with along with/more-so my staff!!
See you next week!!

Week 2 of MARVELous
I'm working on week 2 of MARVELous Maine, even though it's really week 3. You know how that works...you're in a program and excited, then BAM life enters and a whole week goes by before you are even aware! Oh I hate it when that happens.....so enough down the squirreling trail.
So I'm on week 2A: Discovery; I've found out some amazing things about the Britannica School Edition of Marvel. I've checked out the Elementary School level and researched African Water Buffalos. They're actually not water buffalos, that species is found in Asia.... anyway, the Elementary research gives a small amount of understandable information. Next to the description is an image and an opportunity to view a complete article. A side box to the right offers more such as journals and websites.
I checked the Middle School site to see what the higher grade view might look like. There was a greater description of the buffalo, images were palced in the boxed section for expanding the search along with articles and websites, even schools who use the buffalo as their mascot. Both school levels had the same images for the buffalo's, including the Asian Water buffalo. A student working on research for a report or just wanting to find out information would be able to maneuver quite easily in these formats.
Moving forward at the Britannica High School site I had an interest for the study of Ireland, which produced a wealth of information. I had a patron stop by several weeks ago planning a trip, looking for any information we had for them to view. Had I been better accustom to this site I would have encouraged checking this out. To the right, in the boxed area were journals, magazines, best sites and primary sources and e-books. So many different options for viewing the country, lifestyles and travel.
So what happens when you're confused and need "HELP"!! This tab(top right) is awesome way of discovering what Britannica offers and how to understand where and what the different areas are. To the left of this area offers options for best utilizing areas like "work space", which can be used by any grade level while doing research. Workspace is awesome for both teacher and student because work can be saved for review along with sharing with others.
Sooo let's check out another feature 2B: The Britannica Public Library and what this can do for the partons who visit our library. WOW this place is Awesome...like walking into a library for the first time, except it's always open!!
I thought I would try a current event such as the Presidential Race, something the patrons in the library are just buzzing about. The article was of the race for 2012, who is running when voting day is...etc.. I'm overwhelmed by the Google translater and the many languages offered what a wonderful feature for Patrons. I'm not aware if our library has an immediate need but is something I'll introduce and encourage them to check out!
I currently don't have any Patrons who have even searched at this link but knowledge is power and to share this information such as "this day in history" adds another way for them to see what this program has to offer.
Wrapping this up 2C: I'm checking into the Britannica Academic Edition. Having just experienced an earthquake this past week, I decided to search for information about it, a wealth of information appears. I really like the highlighted brief information that is given to the right of the middle column. This offers a quick review, so search time is cut in half. Being able to store articles, images and notes in the workspace along with the ability to share can/will be helpful while working on my own projects Or helping the Patron with theirs.
On to week 3 :)
